The purpose of the Queer Affairs position at ASOSU is to improve campus environment for students who identify as queer, as well as educate all students about queer issues. Queer Affairs provides resources and events that are directly related to the queer community and encourages ideas and suggestions from the community in order to better create a more inclusive, welcoming, and supportive environment for queer-identified students and allies. Queer Affairs will address and advocate cases of discrimination as well as homophobia on campus. Queer Affairs also has a position on the board for OSSERA (Oregon Statewide Student Equal Rights Alliance), Queer Affairs exists to raise awareness of queer student and ally power, and place students in leadership positions to help the make change in areas they feel are necessary.
Current Projects and Goals
Gender Inclusive Bathrooms, Queer Educational Workshops, Transgender Awareness Week (including Trans* Day of Remembrance), more visibility for queer students on campus, collaboration with SOL and Women’s Affairs in order to address issues of intersecting identities that queer students on campus hold.
How to Get Involved
Attend Task Force Meetings, Attend Rainbow Continuum meetings, sign up to intern for ASOSU (up to 3 credits per term!), Become an OSERA board member: In 2001, OSA was joined by the Oregon Student Equal Rights Alliance (OSERA). Mobilizing students at the grassroots level, OSERA is striving to achieve equal access to education for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer people within Oregon's educational communities. Through advocacy, the strengthening of community relationships and the development of leaders, OSERA is working to lead Oregon's universities and community colleges toward safe, diverse and enriching environments for all students, lastly, email Sierra at email@example.com.
