José R. Lemus Toscano
Biography
Hello, my name is José Lemus Toscano, I am a second year first generation Computer Science and Creative Writing major, and I am running for an undergraduate seat in Senate. I have previously held a seat in the Student Fees Committee as the liaison for the Basic Needs Center, of which I work for as a Peer Navigator and Chair of the Student Advisory Board. In my time with the SFC, I’ve seen the amount of effort that goes into running ASOSU and thought to throw my hat in the ring of student perspectives/input. My values include transparency, loyalty and staying true to commitments, and maintaining inner balance. With this in mind, I hope to keep myself available for anyone who wishes to reach out.
Platform Statement
My goals align with ensuring students are aware and taking advantage of all the resources at their disposal at Oregon State University. Our school offers a myriad of help to aid in our success and I want to bring attention to them, especially for first year students who may not be aware of everything at their disposals. For example, the various units that are student fee funded and add to the student experience provide a number of services that are amazing. That being said, I also hold student voice in high importance and will do my best to get student input with every decision I make. With the many communities I am connected with, I hope to reach as many people as possible to take their needs into consideration; from attending club and orgs. meetings whenever possible to holding office hours, I aim to reach whoever is willing to give me time to hear what they wish to see improvements and/or consistency within our university.
I also aim to ensure that ASOSU preserves a productive and positive environment during its operations. Opposing viewpoints are natural in any kind work environment, especially that of student government, in many cases they can even work to provide perspectives that otherwise wouldn’t be heard. That being said, there is a standard I want to maintain where senators don’t feel stressed or worn out as a result of discussions getting out of hand and/or drawing out longer than they should. Mental health is something I hold in high importance and hope to advocate for wherever possible as a representative of the Student Body at Oregon State University.
